The War in Iraq

In our current age the world is engulfed in war. The world we live in is dominated by violence on both religious and political fronts. Considering that the Transcendentalists strongly disapproved of both they would be disgusted with the state the world is currently in. One of the fundamental beliefs of Transcendentalism is peace and harmony between both men and nature. The Transcendentalists did not believe that organized religion helped anyone. They supported following your own faith and beliefs in God, not what someone else tells you to believe. They viewed churches as oppressive and corrupt. They also believed that the political system was corrupt and suppressed people's right to make their own choices. As Thoreau put it in Civil Disobedience "The government itself, which is only the mode which people have chosen to execute their will, is equally liable to be abused and perverted before the people an act through it."
One may argue that the Transcendentalists have always supported fighting for ones beliefs and refusing to conform, similar to the wars going on today. However they also advocated tolerance of others  beliefs and understanding that the ideas of peace and harmony transcend those of violence.
"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps he hears a different drummer"-Henry David Thoreau.
Thoreau suggests here that if someone does not agree with your opinions, perhaps they have had different experiences and have learned different things. A person may not see the world the same way as you, but that does not mean they are incorrect. This important lesson is one that Thoreau and Emerson and all Transcendentalists would hope today's society could learn and use it to create peace in the world.
